Hugh Warren was born April 30, 1951, to June Elaine (Miller) and Charles Warren Vertrees in Muskogee, OK. He passed from this life on May 3, 2024, at the age of 73.
Hugh was a graduate of Sperry High School in the class of 1969. While at Sperry he was an all-state football player, star athlete and all-around outstanding student. Following graduation, Hugh enlisted in the United States Army and served as a sergeant in the 101st Airborne Infantry during Vietnam. When he returned to the United States he enrolled at Central State University, earning a bachelor's degree in history. On January 1, 1971, he married the love of his life, Lee Irene Wilson in Tulsa, OK. Hugh returned to Sperry where he taught and coached for several years.
Hugh had many strong role models who taught him the value of hard work and being a man of integrity. Being a dependable provider was the driving force behind Hugh's unbelievable work ethic. So, the oil boom led he and his family across several states for several years.
Hugh enjoyed camping with Lee, his grandchildren, and Teco, his fierce and loving, yet spoiled chihuahua. He also enjoyed working cattle and supporting his kids and grandkids in their activities. Lee, his children, and grandchildren have the best stories about Hugh telling everyone to jump in the car for an unexpected road trip that more times than not became quite the adventure.
Hugh was proceeded in death by his parents Charles and June Vertrees, stepfather Steve Stevenson, and wife Lee Vertrees.
He is survived by his son Richard Vertrees and his wife Lacey; daughters Chaundra Holley and her husband Robert, Teresa Becker and husband David Wood; sisters Kay Johnson and Jackie Vertrees; grandchildren Sawyer Wall, Mason Holley, Adrian Becker, Ava Vertrees, and Cozette Wood; great grandchildren Baylee Wall; father-in-law David Wilson; mother-in-law Sara Wilson; numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be sent to the Lee Vertrees Memorial Scholarship fund, American Nation Bank, 6295 w. Broadway St, Ardmore, OK 73401, St. Mary's Catholic Church at 125 E. St SW in Ardmore, OK 73401, or Criner Hills Volunteer Fire Department, Station 1, 3346 Countyline Rd, Overbrook, OK 73453
