Funeral services for Raymond Doyle Meeks, of Norwood, Missouri, will be at 10 am Tuesday September 5, 2023, in the Craddock Memorial Chapel with Reverend John Harris officiating. Burial will follow in the Lebanon Cemetery, Lebanon, Oklahoma with Kenny Meeks, John Meeks, Bud Bierhaus, Joe Nutter, Jeff Nutter and Tyler Akers serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Meeks, Mitch Meeks, Greg Burran, Corey Burran, and Greg Meeks.
Ray was born Monday August 14, 1933, in Marietta, Oklahoma to Haskell Bryan Meeks Sr. and Alma Hester Daughrity and died Tuesday August 30, 2023, in Norwood, Missouri at the age of 90 years and 16 days. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving from 1953 until 1955 where he was a heavy weapons specialist. After his training he was stationed in Germany until his discharge. Ray spent most of his adult life working in the oilfields as a derrickman. He spent 25 years in New Mexico before moving to Texas in 1978 and worked numerous jobs. He had previously lived in Grapeland, Texas. He was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the Vanzant Baptist Church. He took immense pride in being a groundskeeper for Weches Baptist Church & Cemetery for 17 years. He moved to Missouri in 2019. Rays love for Bluegrass music never wavered. He began sneaking his older brother's guitar when he was 8 years old and was still playing at age 90! He traveled in his fifth wheeler across Oklahoma, Texas and various other states to Bluegrass Festivals and meeting up with old friends to play music. He enjoyed playing for the shut-ins at the nursing homes and churches. Some of his most favorite times were just jamming in the living room with friends and family, whom he loved dearly.
Ray is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty; brothers, Haskell Bryan Meeks Jr., James Meeks, Gary Meeks; son, Jeff Burran. He is survived by his children, , Mike Burran and his wife Debbie of Grapeland, Texas, David Burran of Grapeland, Texas, Vicki Burran Barber of Grapeland, Texas; brothers, Jack Meeks of Richardson, Texas, Larry Meeks of Stephenville, Texas; sisters, Joyce Nutter of Lone Grove, Oklahoma, Jan Meeks of Norman, Oklahoma, Brenda Paul and her husband Bernard of Norwood, Missouri; 18 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; 3 great greatgrandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
