Richard Stephen
Simms
Jun 6, 1943 — Apr 9, 2023
Richard Stephen Simms was born on June 6, 1943, in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, to Richard Earl and Monta (Burr) Simms. He passed away on Sunday, April 9, 2023. He attended Lindsey High School, where he was a graduate of the Class of 1961. He excelled academically, graduating as Salutatorian, and athletically, all-stating in football and track. He followed in his father's footsteps, attending the University of Oklahoma and playing football for the Sooners.
At the University of Oklahoma, he was a proud member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, as well as a cadet in the University's ROTC program. Also, while at OU, he met the love of his life, Carol Lee Daube. They went on one date and he knew she was the one for him. They were married on August 8th, 1964 in Ardmore. Upon graduation in 1965, he had a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Air Defense Artillery. After completing the Officer Basic Course at Fort Bliss, Texas, Rick and Carol Lee headed out for Rick's duty assignment in Vicenza, Italy. Rick served two years of active duty in the United States Army and upon fulfilling his commitment, he and Carol Lee returned to Ardmore. Rick went to work for The Daube Company where he was involved in oil and gas drilling and exploration.
It was there he discovered a lifelong passion for geology and rock collecting. He was a self-professed rock hound and a self-taught nature enthusiast. According to his loved ones, he knew the names of every bird in the sky, every tree and wildflower and enjoyed sharing this passion with his family. Rick loved being active and was his happiest outdoors. He was an ardent runner and could be seen all over Ardmore on his jogs. He enjoyed his volleyball and tennis groups and later enjoyed playing golf with his buddies as well. Papa loved sharing his passion for the outdoors with his family and grandchildren. He was always the first out the door for family hikes, picnics, and bike rides.
Rick is survived by his wife, Carol Lee of the home; Daughter Bailey Ann Broughton and husband Brett of Norman and Son, Richard Leon Simms of Ardmore. His grandchildren Caroline Daube Broughton and William Lee Broughton, Lauren Olivia Simms, Richard Spencer Simms and Nathan Joseph Simms. His Sister, Brenda Ann Larsen, and Brother-in-Law, Col. Hank Larsen. His grandchildren fiercely loved their Papa and were by his side until the end. He will forever be known as the Rock of the Simms family.
A service in his honor will be held on Friday, April 14, 2023, at 2:30 pm at St. Philip's Episcopal Church, Ardmore, Oklahoma.
