Roger Howell Hughes

May 7, 1939 – April 14, 2024

Ardmore - Roger Howell Hughes was born May 7th, 1939, to Marjorie Holmes and Drennen Howell Hughes in Ardmore, OK. He passed from this life into glory on April 14th, 2024, at the age of 84, in his home surrounded by his beloved family.

On September 3rd, 1961, Roger married Georgia Beth Marion in the First Methodist Church of Ardmore. They celebrated their 60th anniversary in 2021.

Roger was a graduate of Healdton High School in 1957, attended the University of Oklahoma, and was a member of "The Pride of Oklahoma" marching band. In 1961, Roger served in the Army Reserves, then returned to OU where he graduated with a degree in Finance in 1963.

Roger was an active member of First Methodist Church of Ardmore for 62 years with his wife Georgia Beth and served on the finance and building projects committees as well as many other committees. Together, they, along with many others, formed the Fellowship Sunday School Class. He and Georgia were life-long members of the Sanctuary choir and other music ministries in the church and worked extensively with the youth program. He also sang and performed in many community musical events including the Community Chorale Society and Southern Harmony Quartet.

Roger was active in the Boy Scouts of America for 50 years, serving as Scoutmaster for Troop 5 in Ardmore and in many other lay and leadership positions with the Arbuckle Area Council BSA. He attended BSA National Jamborees and Philmont Scout Ranch twice - once as a scout and once with his son and members of Troop 5. He was an Eagle Scout, as was his brother Robert and his son Ken. He received the Silver Beaver award in 1979 for his service to youth and was awarded the distinguished Golden Eagle award in 2013.

Roger served the greater Carter County area within the Planning Commission and in many other volunteer and leadership capacities. Roger was also a lifelong member of the Kiwanis Club, serving as president of the local chapter. His life was foundationally built on his belief that we should all serve others as Christ served us. To serve others in any way that was needed was his calling and passion. He is described by all those that knew him and worked with him as "wise counsel," "easy to work with," and "truthful, yet always respectful."  Another friend said about Roger - "He was everybody's Dad!"

Roger spent the vast majority of his working life as Chief Administrator of the Medical Arts Clinic in Ardmore, Oklahoma, until his retirement. He was also previously with Jo-K Leatherworks, project manager for Mercy Hospital of Ardmore and, after retirement, with the Noble Foundation.

Roger and Georgia built a life together full of meaning and purpose with their children and extended family, spending hours at the church, community activities and many weekends on Lake Murray - enjoying their family and friends with boating and fishing. Roger and Georgia had a houseboat and a BR3 family as they enjoyed their houseboat in retirement. As an OU graduate, he was an avid follower and life-long supporter of all of the Sooner sports teams.

Throughout his entire life, Roger lived out his faith and belief in Jesus Christ. His vast and steadfast commitment to being a Christ follower was evident in all that he did, all of his relationships, and the legacy that he leaves for his family, his church and community. Roger made a beautiful and lasting impression of love and sacrifice as he walked this earth. We will miss him deeply but know that He is now with the God who has loved him forever. "Well done, good and faithful servant, well done."

Roger was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Beth Marion Hughes, his mother Marjorie Holmes Hughes, his father Drennen Howell Hughes and his brother Robert Vincent Hughes.

He is survived by his daughter, Kelley Segler and her husband Billy of Ardmore, son Ken Hughes and wife Julie of Thompson's Station, TN; grandchildren Sam Segler, Jake Hughes and Brooke Hughes Cochran; nephews and nieces Brian Hughes, Michael Hughes, Darrell Hughes, Elizabeth Etter, Patrick Stearman and Jennifer Timme; along with numerous great-nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, April 20th, at 3pm at First Methodist Church of Ardmore with Rev. David Daniel officiating, and a reception will immediately follow at the Colvert Ministry Center located across the street from the church.
