Having been called home by his Lord and Savior, Charles Howard "Skeet" Smith, Sr., 77, departed this earthly world Thursday, June 12, 2014. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church, Ardmore, Ok. Dr. Alton Fannin officiating. Interment will follow in the Ringling Cemetery. The family will host a visitation Sunday, June 15, from 4 to 6 in the Craddock Memorial Chapel. Known as Skeet to most, he was born on May 3, 1937 in the Ringling area, to Wm. Howard and Oura (Folsum) Smith. He married the former Shannon Jones, on March 16, 1962 at the Reck Baptist Church. A resident of Ringling, Ok, they were blessed with three children, Patti, Chuck and Michael Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings; R.H. Southerland, James Southerland, Bill Southerland, Lorita Smith, C.L. Smith, Sid Smith. Skeet worked in the oilfields of Oklahoma from a early age. He bought his first truck in the mid 70's and from that; C.H. "Skeet" Smith Trucking was born. For 19 years, he moved iron and made memories, as well as friendships, that lasted a life time. Nothing made him happier than to run-into someone he worked for or someone who worked for him and sit down over a pot of coffee and talk about old times and slinging iron. Towards the end of his years in trucking, he built and operated Lake Country Store. He loved the years his family spent camping at Lake Murray and always dreamed of opening a convenience store near the lake. He realized that dream, and relocated the family to Ardmore in 1990. He officially retired in 2005, but that just meant he only had to work 8 hour days. For over 3 decades, Skeet was the guiding force of the Carter County Group Homes ( C.C.A.R.C.) , a non-profit agency that provided residential services to people with developmental disabilities. During his involvement, the agency went from a grass-roots parent organization to one of the top-notch service providers in Oklahoma. He considered the residents and the staff, part of his family, and they treated him the same. Skeet worked at fulfilling his obligations and taking care of his family up to the very end, despite his declining health. His family takes comfort in knowing he will waste no time preparing for his families eventual reunion in his Heavenly home, and will probably get a little work done for his Lord while he is waiting. He is survived by his wife Shannon and son, Chuck of the home; daughter, Patti Smith of Ardmore, son, Michael and wife, Jenifer Smith, of Ardmore. Grandchildren; Maggie, Talon and Tanner Smith; Justin Richardson and Jessica Smith, all of Ardmore. Skeet was a great "PaPa" and never tired of his grandchildren's company. He is also survived by brother, Otis Southerland, of Wilson, OK and sister, Pat Waswo, of Cashion, OK. And brother, Claudell Smith, Arizona. Serving as pallbearers will be his brothers in Christ and his Sunday School class, Bob Elliott, Bob Powers, Arthur Ricketts, Waylon Alexander, Alvin Baker, Tony Neely, and Bill McMurtry. Honorary bearers are the Carter County Group Home Residents. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that Memorials can be left to the Carter County Group Homes ( C.C.A.R.C.) 45 Heritage Ardmore, OK 73401.
